Best Dart Checkouts: 170 to 2

Knowing the best checkout path for every score is essential for competitive darts. This guide covers the optimal finishing routes — the paths that give you the best chance of checking out.

Why Checkout Strategy Matters

The difference between a good and average darts player often comes down to finishing. Two players might have similar 3-dart averages, but the one who knows the best checkout paths will win more legs. A good checkout considers:

  • Leave a double: If you miss the first or second dart, your remaining score should still be on a double.
  • Prefer big doubles: D20 and D16 are the most common targets because missing them leaves another double (D10 or D8).
  • Minimize darts: Always go for the checkout in the fewest darts possible.

Checkout Practice Tips

  • Start with the most common finishes: Practice D20, D16, D10, D8, and D4 until they are automatic.
  • Learn the T20 route: Many checkouts start with T20 (60). If your remaining score is between 61 and 120, T20 often sets up a nice double.
  • Practice 2-dart finishes: Scores of 40 (D20), 32 (D16), 36 (D18), 24 (D12) — these are the ones you will see most often.
  • Have a backup plan: Know what you will aim for if you miss your first dart. This is what separates good finishers from great ones.

FAQ

What is the highest checkout in darts?

170 — Treble 20, Treble 20, Double Bull (T20 → T20 → DB). This is the maximum possible finish.

Why is 169 not a valid checkout?

Because 169 requires scoring 119 with 2 darts and finishing on a double, and there is no combination that works. Similarly, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162, and 159 are impossible checkouts.

What is the best double to aim for?

Double 16 is considered the best because if you miss into the single 16, you have 16 left — which is Double 8. Miss that into single 8, and you have Double 4. The halving chain continues.
